Overview

The RSV mRNA vaccine is an investigational messenger RNA-based vaccine candidate being developed by Afrigen Biologics, a South African biotechnology firm acting as the central hub for the WHO and Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) mRNA Technology Transfer Programme. The vaccine is designed to protect against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) by utilizing mRNA platform technology to encode viral antigens. Upon administration, the vaccine instructs host cells to synthesize these antigens, thereby eliciting a robust adaptive immune response characterized by the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell activation. This program is part of a strategic effort to build regional vaccine manufacturing capacity and address the global burden of RSV, particularly in infants and the elderly.
