Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rybelsus is an oral tablet formulation of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It works by increasing insulin release, slowing gastric emptying, and decreasing glucagon secretion, which helps control blood sugar levels. Rybelsus is available in two formulations: R1 (3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg tablets) and R2 (1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg tablets), which are not substitutable on a mg per mg basis. It is taken once daily on an empty stomach with water, requiring a 30-minute wait before consuming food or other medications. While primarily indicated for glycemic control, clinical studies have shown Rybelsus can also help with weight reduction, though it is not FDA-approved for weight management.
