Drug intelligence / Profile preview
S-Adenosyl-1,8-diamino-3-thiooctane is a synthetic small molecule and structural analog of S-adenosylmethionine. It acts as a potent inhibitor of aminopropyltransferases involved in polyamine biosynthesis, particularly spermidine synthase and spermine synthase. By mimicking the natural substrate but resisting enzymatic conversion, it blocks the transfer of aminopropyl groups to putrescine and other polyamines, thereby disrupting cellular polyamine metabolism. This compound has been used experimentally to study the regulation of polyamine pathways and as a tool for investigating enzyme mechanisms in biochemistry[2][5][3]. Its primary use is research; it is not approved for therapeutic applications.
