Overview

The Sabin-strain inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine (sIPV) is a trivalent biologic vaccine developed by the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS). It is the world's first inactivated polio vaccine produced using attenuated Sabin strains (Types I, II, and III) rather than the traditional wild-type Salk strains. The vaccine is manufactured by growing the Sabin strains on Vero cells, followed by purification and formalin inactivation. It is administered via intramuscular injection and is indicated for the active prevention of poliomyelitis. By utilizing attenuated strains for production, sIPV significantly reduces the biosafety risks associated with manufacturing compared to traditional Salk-IPV, supporting global efforts to eradicate polio and facilitate the transition away from oral polio vaccines (OPV).
