Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Safflower + salvia miltiorrhiza is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination widely used for promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) and Salvia miltiorrhiza (commonly known as Danshen) are often paired in clinical practice to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, ischemic encephalopathy, chronic cerebral insufficiency, and cerebral infarction. The main active ingredients are hydroxy safflower yellow A (HSYA) from safflower and salvianic acid A (SAA) from Salvia miltiorrhiza. These compounds exhibit synergistic effects in improving hemodynamics, reducing blood viscosity, protecting vascular endothelium, inhibiting platelet aggregation, providing neuroprotection, regulating lipids, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. This combination is the basis of the well-known "Danhong injection," an approved TCM injectable formulation for cardiovascular indications in China[1][2].
