Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**saffron extract + scutellaria baicalensis extract** is a combination of two standardized botanical extracts, *saffron* (*Crocus sativus*) and *scutellaria baicalensis* ("Huang-Qin"). This combination has demonstrated a **synergistic effect** in reducing symptoms of mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety. Saffron extract is known for its mood-regulating effects, primarily by modulating neurotransmitter systems like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine and exerting anti-inflammatory effects. Scutellaria baicalensis extract contains bioactive flavonoids such as baicalin and baicalein, which increase brain dopamine levels, protect dopaminergic neurons, inhibit monoamine oxidase, enhance GABAergic activity, and provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidative benefits. The synergistic combination was clinically demonstrated to improve emotional well-being, reduce depression and anxiety scores, and was well-tolerated over a six-week supplementation period with minimal adverse effects. The specific commercial formulation studied was SAFFR’UP[1].
