Salbutamol + oxygen is a combination therapy used primarily in the management of acute and severe respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other forms of bronchospasm. Salbutamol (also known as albuterol) is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that acts as a bronchodilator, relaxing bronchial smooth muscle to relieve airway obstruction and improve airflow. Oxygen therapy provides supplemental oxygen to correct or prevent hypoxemia, improving tissue oxygenation during acute respiratory distress. The combination is often administered via nebulization, where salbutamol is delivered in aerosolized form using oxygen as the driving gas. This approach can be particularly beneficial for patients with significant hypoxemia or those experiencing severe exacerbations of obstructive airway diseases. Clinical studies have shown that combining bronchodilators like salbutamol with supplemental oxygen can enhance exercise performance and reduce dyspnea more effectively than either treatment alone in patients with severe COPD[4][5].
