Salicylic acid + alpha hydroxy acid is a topical combination of two classes of exfoliating agents commonly used in dermatology and skincare. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that penetrates into pores to dissolve sebum and exfoliate dead skin cells, making it effective for oily and acne-prone skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as lactic or glycolic acids, are water-soluble acids that work on the surface of the skin to break down bonds between dead cells, promoting their shedding and improving texture and brightness. When combined, these ingredients provide synergistic exfoliation—salicylic acid targets oil-rich areas while AHAs address hydrophilic regions—resulting in improved treatment outcomes for conditions like acne, rough texture, hyperpigmentation, and signs of aging. The combination can be found in various over-the-counter cleansers, serums, peels, or prescription formulations[1][2][4][9]. Both components may increase sun sensitivity; sunscreen use is recommended during treatment[3].
