Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sanggua is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed as a tablet for the treatment of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and mild type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The formula is composed of five primary botanical ingredients: mulberry leaf (*Folium Mori*), bitter melon (*Fructus Momordicae Charantiae*), kudzu root (*Radix Puerariae*), Chinese yam (*Rhizoma Dioscoreae*), and cassia seed (*Semen Cassiae*). Mechanistically, it is designed to clear heat, generate body fluids, and tonify the spleen and kidneys according to TCM principles. Modern pharmacological studies suggest that its active components, such as mulberry polysaccharides and bitter melon saponins, contribute to blood glucose reduction and lipid profile improvement. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials led by Tongji Hospital to assess its efficacy on glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and its impact on the gut microbiota.
