Overview

Saquinavir + zidovudine is a combination of two antiretroviral drugs used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults. **Saquinavir** is a small molecule HIV-1 protease inhibitor that prevents viral replication by inhibiting the HIV-1 protease enzyme, which is necessary for the production of mature viral particles. **Zidovudine** is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that acts as a thymidine analog, competitively inhibiting reverse transcriptase, thereby preventing HIV RNA from being transcribed into DNA. This combination targets two different steps of the HIV replication cycle for a synergistic antiretroviral effect. Saquinavir is most commonly marketed under the brand name Invirase. Both drugs have been extensively studied as part of combination regimens for HIV, though modern standards often use different combinations due to improved efficacy and tolerability of newer regimens[1][2][3][4][5].
