Overview
The SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine developed by Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines is an investigational mRNA-based vaccine designed to induce protective immunity against COVID-19. Developed as part of the World Health Organization's (WHO) mRNA Technology Transfer Programme, this vaccine serves as a prototype platform to build manufacturing capacity in low- and middle-income countries. The vaccine utilizes a lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery system developed in collaboration with Curapath and is manufactured in Afrigen's GMP facility in Cape Town, South Africa. While initially targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, the underlying mRNA platform is intended for adaptation to other high-burden diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.
