Overview

Satraplatin + paclitaxel is a combination of two chemotherapeutic agents investigated primarily for the treatment of advanced cancers, including prostate and non-small cell lung cancer. Satraplatin is an orally bioavailable platinum-based compound (code name JM216) that acts as a DNA antagonist by forming DNA adducts and crosslinks, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. It is notable for its oral administration route, unlike other platinum analogues which require intravenous infusion[2][5][6]. Paclitaxel (brand name Taxol) is a microtubule inhibitor that prevents cancer cells from dividing by stabilizing microtubules and blocking mitosis[7]. Preclinical studies have shown synergistic antitumor activity when these drugs are used in combination, particularly in prostate cancer models[8]. The combination has been evaluated in clinical trials for advanced non-small cell lung cancer and hormone-refractory prostate cancer[3][4].
