Sea buckthorn fermented milk + Lactiplantibacillus plantarum YHG-87 is an oral, investigational, probiotic-based functional food product being developed for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). [1] It combines sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), which is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, with the probiotic strain *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* YHG-87 in a fermented milk base. In preclinical studies using a mouse model of UC, the combination demonstrated synergistic effects, significantly alleviating symptoms like weight loss, bloody stools, and colon shortening more effectively than sea buckthorn fermented milk alone. Its mechanism of action involves modulating the host immune response by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10. It also exerts antioxidant effects by increasing glutathione (GSH) levels and reducing markers of oxidative stress such as myeloperoxidase (MPO) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, the product modulates the gut microbial community, restoring a healthier balance. The research was conducted by academic institutions, including Ningxia University.
