Overview

This therapeutic protocol was developed and evaluated by the Children's Hospital in Dziekanów Leśny, Poland, for the treatment of non-keratinised stratified squamous metaplasia (N-KSM) of the urinary bladder in pediatric patients. The regimen consists of an initial 10-day course of a second-generation cephalosporin, followed by a three-month maintenance phase involving alternating chemotherapeutics, specifically nitrofurantoin, administered in therapeutic doses with weekly rotations. The protocol also incorporates a 1% aminoglycoside solution, which is typically administered intravesically. This multi-drug approach is designed to eradicate chronic bacterial colonization or recurrent infection, which are considered primary drivers of the pathological transformation of the bladder urothelium into squamous tissue.
