Selenium (75Se) norcholesterol is a radiopharmaceutical used in nuclear imaging studies, particularly for the diagnosis of adrenal gland disorders. It is a derivative of cholesterol labeled with the radioactive isotope Selenium 75, which emits gamma rays and has a half-life of approximately 120 days. The compound was primarily indicated for imaging and diagnosing adrenal pathologies such as Cushing syndrome, Cushing's disease, adrenal carcinoma, adrenal insufficiency, and phaeochromocytoma. Its mechanism involves mimicking cholesterol uptake by adrenocortical tissue; after administration, it accumulates in the adrenal cortex where its gamma emissions can be detected using nuclear medicine imaging techniques. Selenium (75Se) norcholesterol was marketed under the brand name Scintadren but was withdrawn from use in favor of other agents like Iodine 131-labeled compounds[1][2].
