Overview
A topical combination drug containing **selenium disulfide** (also called selenium sulfide) and **salicylic acid** is used most commonly in medicated shampoos for the treatment and management of **seborrheic dermatitis** and **dandruff**. Selenium disulfide acts as an antifungal by inhibiting the growth of Malassezia species, reducing sebum production, and functioning as a cytostatic agent to slow down abnormal cell proliferation of the epidermis. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent that exfoliates the stratum corneum (outermost skin layer), reducing scaling, soothing irritation, and exerting mild anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal effects. The dual mechanism targets both the fungal and hyperkeratotic/inflammatory pathways in seborrheic dermatitis, improving symptoms such as itching, redness, dandruff, and overall scalp health[1][2][4][6].
