Self retained cryopreserved amniotic membrane + lifitegrast is a combination therapy that pairs a device (self retained cryopreserved amniotic membrane) with a pharmaceutical agent (lifitegrast). The self retained cryopreserved amniotic membrane is a biological device derived from the inner lining of placental tissue, processed and cryopreserved to preserve its structural and biologic properties. It acts as a biological bandage for the ocular surface, promoting epithelialization, wound healing, anti-inflammatory activity, and reducing fibrosis and scarring. The membrane is generally applied directly to the ocular surface, forming a physical barrier and providing biochemical signals that suppress inflammation, support corneal stem cell turnover, and potentially exhibit antimicrobial properties[1][2][3][5][6][7][8][10]. Lifitegrast is a small molecule pharmaceutical (marketed as Xiidra) that acts as a lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist, blocking LFA-1/ICAM-1 interaction and thereby reducing T-cell mediated inflammation on the ocular surface. In combination, these therapies are sometimes considered for refractory or severe ocular surface diseases such as dry eye or corneal ulcers, utilizing the rapid epithelialization and anti-inflammatory support of the membrane with the ongoing immunomodulatory effects of lifitegrast.
