Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This combination therapy consists of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist semaglutide (administered as Wegovy) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) comprising estradiol (Estradot) and progesterone (Utrogestan). Developed as part of the DECLARED-CT clinical trial led by Lia Bally at the University of Bern, the regimen targets early postmenopausal women who have or are at risk for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Semaglutide functions by activating GLP-1 receptors to enhance insulin secretion, inhibit glucagon release, and reduce appetite. The addition of MHT is intended to restore estrogen levels, which typically decline during menopause, thereby potentially improving glucose homeostasis and energy metabolism beyond the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonism alone.
