MRC-5 is a human diploid cell line composed of fibroblasts, originally developed in 1966 from the lung tissue of a 14-week-old aborted male fetus. This cell line is extensively used in biomedical research, particularly as a substrate for the production of various viral vaccines, including those for hepatitis A, varicella, polio, rubella, and rabies. In the context of a therapeutic agent, "semi-allogenic human fibroblast (MRC-5)" refers to an experimental vaccine approach where MRC-5 cells are transfected with autologous tumor DNA. This modification allows the MRC-5 cells to express tumor-associated antigens, which are then presented to the immune system. The goal is to activate a cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response against cancer cells, thereby exhibiting potential immunostimulatory and antineoplastic activities.
