Senna Plus is an over-the-counter combination pharmaceutical product developed and marketed by SDA Laboratories for the treatment of occasional constipation. It contains two active small molecule ingredients: sennosides and docusate sodium. Sennosides are stimulant laxatives derived from the senna plant; they act as prodrugs that are hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria into active anthraquinone derivatives (rhein anthrones). These metabolites stimulate the myenteric plexus and irritate the colonic mucosa, leading to increased peristalsis and water secretion into the intestinal lumen. Docusate sodium is an anionic surfactant that functions as a stool softener by reducing the surface tension of the fecal mass, which allows water and lipids to penetrate and soften the stool. This dual-action mechanism provides both stimulatory effects on the bowel and softening of the stool to facilitate easier evacuation.
