Overview

sertraline + simvastatin is a combination therapy consisting of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sertraline and the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor simvastatin. This combination was specifically investigated by the New York State Psychiatric Institute in the CHIME (Sertraline and Simvastatin in Depression and Inflammation) pilot study (NCT00208117). The rationale for this combination is based on the hypothesis that systemic inflammation, often marked by elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, contributes to the pathophysiology of depression and increases the risk of coronary artery disease. Sertraline is used to address depressive symptoms by increasing synaptic serotonin levels, while simvastatin is employed for its pleiotropic anti-inflammatory effects in addition to its primary role in lowering cholesterol. The study aimed to determine if simvastatin could augment antidepressant response or if sertraline could independently reduce inflammatory markers in patients with mild depression and elevated inflammation.
