Sertraline + transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a combination therapy being investigated for the treatment of depression in patients with Parkinson's disease. Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) small molecule drug that works by binding to the serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin into the presynaptic terminal and increasing synaptic serotonin levels. tDCS is a non-invasive neuromodulation device that delivers a low-intensity direct electrical current to the brain via electrodes placed on the scalp. This electrical stimulation is thought to modulate neuronal membrane potentials and cortical excitability, potentially enhancing the therapeutic effects of pharmacological antidepressants. This specific combination is being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial sponsored by National Cheng-Kung University Hospital to determine its efficacy and safety as an add-on therapy for patients with Parkinson's disease who exhibit depressive symptoms.
