Sevelamer carbonate and sevelamer hydrochloride are non-absorbed phosphate binding polymers used to control hyperphosphatemia (elevated blood phosphate levels) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. Both forms act as phosphate binders by binding dietary phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing its absorption into the bloodstream. This mechanism helps reduce serum phosphorus levels and prevent complications such as hypocalcemia and bone disorders associated with CKD. Sevelamer was developed to provide an alternative to calcium-based phosphate binders, reducing the risk of vascular calcification. The primary indications for both forms are management of hyperphosphatemia in CKD patients on dialysis[1][2][3][4][5].
