Overview

**Sevirumab + ganciclovir** is an experimental combination therapy for the treatment of **cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis** in immunocompromised individuals, especially those with AIDS. **Sevirumab (also known as MSL-109)** is a human monoclonal antibody targeting CMV glycoprotein H, thereby blocking viral entry into host cells. **Ganciclovir** is a synthetic nucleoside analogue with antiviral activity that inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing replication of viral DNA. The combination was studied to assess whether immunotherapy (sevirumab) plus standard antiviral (ganciclovir) could improve outcomes for CMV retinitis compared to standard antiviral therapy alone. Sevirumab was discontinued from development after Phase 2 studies did not show significant benefit over ganciclovir alone. Ganciclovir is marketed and widely used for CMV retinitis and other CMV infections in immunocompromised patients[1][2][5][6].
