Overview

Sevoflurane + desflurane is a combination of two volatile inhalational anesthetics, both widely used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in adults and pediatric patients. Both agents are nonflammable, highly fluorinated ethers with rapid onset and offset properties, making them suitable for outpatient procedures and situations requiring quick emergence from anesthesia. Their mechanism of action involves modulation of multiple ligand-gated ion channels in the central nervous system—primarily enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission via GABA(A) receptors and glycine receptors while inhibiting excitatory neurotransmission through antagonism at glutamate (NMDA) receptors, among others. Both drugs also affect various ionic currents including calcium, potassium, and sodium channels. Sevoflurane is known for its smooth induction profile with minimal airway irritation; desflurane offers even faster recovery but can cause airway irritation at higher concentrations. The combination may be considered experimentally or in research settings to compare or optimize anesthetic effects but is not a standard marketed fixed-dose product[1][2][4][5][6][7].
