Overview

Sevoflurane + oxygen is an inhalational combination used primarily for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in adult and pediatric patients undergoing inpatient or outpatient surgery. **Sevoflurane** is a volatile halogenated ether anesthetic, typically administered via vaporization, and oxygen serves as the carrier gas to deliver the anesthetic to the lungs. Sevoflurane acts mainly by enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission and reducing excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Its mechanism involves positive modulation (agonism) of GABA(A) and glycine receptors and antagonism at glutamate and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, as well as modulation of other ion channels, which results in muscle relaxation, loss of consciousness, and analgesia. It is characterized by a rapid onset and offset due to low blood-gas solubility. The combination is widely used for both induction and maintenance of anesthesia, especially when mask induction is preferred (e.g., in pediatric patients). Oxygen is essential for safe delivery, preventing hypoxia and supporting respiration during anesthesia[1][2][4][5].
