Overview

Sevoflurane + remifentanil is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents commonly used together for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. Sevoflurane is a volatile halogenated ether administered by inhalation, acting primarily as a hypnotic agent, while remifentanil is an ultra-short-acting synthetic opioid analgesic administered intravenously. The combination provides both hypnosis (loss of consciousness) and potent analgesia (pain relief), allowing for rapid titration and control during surgical procedures. Their interaction is synergistic, meaning that when used together, lower doses of each drug are required to achieve the desired anesthetic effect compared to when either drug is used alone[1][2][5]. This synergy reduces the risk of side effects such as circulatory depression associated with higher doses of individual agents[1]. The primary indications are for use in inpatient and outpatient surgeries requiring general anesthesia.
