Overview

Sha Shen + Maidong is a traditional Chinese herbal combination most commonly known as "Sha Shen Mai Men Dong Tang" (沙参麦冬汤), composed primarily of the herbs Sha Shen (Glehnia root or Adenophora root) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogon japonicus root). This formula is used to nourish Yin and moisten dryness in the lungs and stomach. It is indicated for symptoms such as dry cough with little or no phlegm, dry mouth or throat, thirst, sore throat or chest tightness, fever or hot flashes due to internal dryness and Yin deficiency. The mechanism of action involves hydrating mucous membranes by promoting fluid production and nourishing lung/stomach Yin while clearing heat. Modern research suggests additional effects including anti-inflammatory activity, immune enhancement, gastric mucosal protection, inhibition of gastric hyperactivity, antioxidant properties, and potential anti-tumor effects. The formula may be used for conditions like chronic dry coughs (including those associated with pneumonia), bronchitis, Sjögren’s syndrome-related dryness symptoms, esophageal disorders due to Yin deficiency (e.g., reflux esophagitis), pediatric mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP), and general states of dehydration affecting respiratory/digestive tracts[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
