Overview

Emergent BioSolutions is developing a live attenuated vaccine candidate designed to provide dual protection against Shigellosis and Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infections. The vaccine utilizes a weakened Shigella strain as a vector to express specific ETEC antigens, aiming to stimulate a robust immune response against two of the primary bacterial causes of diarrheal disease worldwide. Intended primarily for traveler's health and populations in endemic regions, the project has been supported by research collaborations and funding agreements with the University of Maryland School of Medicine. As of the early 2020s, the vaccine candidate was positioned in the preclinical stage of development.
