Overview
SHX-001 is a transdermal patch formulation of racemic ketamine being developed by Shenox Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). As an NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonist, it is designed to deliver ketamine with a gradual and prolonged ascending pharmacokinetic profile. This delivery method aims to minimize the peak-related adverse effects and addiction risks typically associated with rapid-onset administration routes such as intravenous infusion or intranasal spray. The drug has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials (NCT03721900) to assess its safety, pharmacokinetics, and antidepressant efficacy in patients who are sub-optimally responsive to standard-of-care treatments.
