Reduxine is a combination weight-loss medication primarily marketed in Russia and CIS countries. It consists of sibutramine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), and microcrystalline cellulose. Sibutramine acts centrally in the hypothalamus to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and to a lesser extent, dopamine, which leads to increased satiety and enhanced thermogenesis. The microcrystalline cellulose component serves as an enteric adsorbent and a bulking agent to further promote a feeling of fullness. While sibutramine was withdrawn from major international markets, including the United States and the European Union, in 2010 due to concerns over increased cardiovascular risks (such as stroke and myocardial infarction) identified in the SCOUT trial, Reduxine remains a widely prescribed pharmaceutical treatment for obesity and metabolic syndrome in specific jurisdictions.
