Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination of two distinct medications: sildenafil (a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor primarily used for erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension) and apixaban (a direct oral anticoagulant that inhibits Factor Xa, used to prevent and treat blood clots in conditions like atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism). According to the search results, there is a potential drug-drug interaction between these medications. An in vitro study found that sildenafil strongly inhibited apixaban efflux by P-glycoprotein (P-gp), suggesting that sildenafil may increase apixaban levels in the body. The serum concentration of sildenafil can also potentially be increased when combined with apixaban. This combination requires caution as PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil may slightly raise the chances of bleeding, which is particularly concerning when taken with blood thinners like apixaban. While research suggests the bleeding risk may not be significant, healthcare professionals should make the final decision on whether it's appropriate to take these medications together. For patients taking both medications, it's important to monitor for any signs of bleeding such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bloody stools, and report these immediately to a healthcare professional.
