Silver diamine fluoride + glass ionomer is a combination therapy utilized in restorative dentistry for the management of deep dental caries, particularly for indirect pulp capping in young permanent teeth. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a topical medicament that acts as a potent antimicrobial and caries-arresting agent; its silver ions disrupt bacterial DNA and proteins, while its fluoride ions promote the remineralization of tooth structure to form acid-resistant fluorapatite. Glass ionomer (GI) is a restorative material that chemically bonds to the tooth structure, providing a marginal seal and a sustained release of fluoride to further aid in remineralization. This specific combination is being evaluated by Cairo University in a randomized pilot study to assess its clinical success and impact on postoperative pain in asymptomatic teeth with deep caries and open apices following minimal caries removal.
