Simvastatin (Dr. Reddy's Laboratories)

Simvastatin is a small molecule HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) developed as a generic formulation by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories. It is a prodrug that, upon oral administration, is hydrolyzed to its active form, simvastatin acid. This active metabolite competitively inhibits 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway. By reducing hepatic cholesterol synthesis, it triggers an increase in LDL receptor expression, leading to enhanced clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and the reduction of cardiovascular risk. Dr. Reddy's has demonstrated bioequivalence of its 80 mg tablet formulation to the innovator product, Zocor.
