Sm-p80 + GLA-SE (SchistoShield) is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine developed for the prevention of schistosomiasis, specifically targeting the parasite *Schistosoma mansoni*. The vaccine formulation consists of the Sm-p80 antigen, which is the large subunit of the parasite's calpain protein, combined with the GLA-SE adjuvant (a synthetic Toll-like receptor 4 agonist in a stable oil-in-water emulsion). Sm-p80 is a critical protein involved in the renewal and repair of the parasite's surface membrane (tegument). By inducing a Th1-biased immune response against this target, the vaccine aims to disrupt the parasite's life cycle, reduce the adult worm burden, and significantly decrease egg production, which is the primary driver of clinical pathology in schistosomiasis. The vaccine was developed through a collaboration between Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, the Infectious Disease Research Institute (now Access to Advanced Health Institute), and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
