Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Smoflipid is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, white, homogenous lipid injectable emulsion developed and marketed by Fresenius Kabi. It is a four-oil blend comprising soybean oil (6%), medium-chain triglycerides (6%), olive oil (5%), and fish oil (3%), providing a total lipid content of 0.2 g/mL. Smoflipid is indicated in adult and pediatric patients, including term and preterm neonates, as a source of calories and essential fatty acids for parenteral nutrition when oral or enteral nutrition is not possible, insufficient, or contraindicated. The formulation delivers a balanced mixture of essential and non-essential fatty acids, including omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which support energy metabolism, cellular structure, and immune function while minimizing the risk of lipid peroxidation and parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease.
