Overview

Snail mucus enriched with carob extract (also known as SSCS) is a natural therapeutic compound under preclinical investigation for inflammatory bowel diseases, particularly ulcerative colitis. [1, 2, 3] It is a biologic/natural product derived from the mucus of snails that have been fed a diet including carob. [1] The active components are believed to be collagen and allantoin from the snail mucus, combined with phenolics, tannins, and flavonoids from the carob extract. [2, 3] The compound has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and tissue-regenerative properties in preclinical studies. [2] In rat models of ulcerative colitis, the 30% carob-enriched version (SSCS30%) showed protective effects comparable to the drug sulfasalazine, reducing mucosal injury, inflammation, and oxidative stress. [1, 2] Although promising, the compound has not yet been tested in human clinical trials. [1, 3]
