Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium acetate + glucose is an intravenous infusion solution used for fluid resuscitation, electrolyte replacement, and as a source of calories. The sodium acetate component serves as a metabolic precursor to bicarbonate, which helps to maintain or correct acid-base balance and treat mild metabolic acidosis without the tissue irritation associated with direct bicarbonate administration. The glucose component provides a source of readily available energy (4 kcal/g), which helps to prevent ketosis and minimize protein breakdown in patients who are unable to maintain adequate oral intake. This combination is commonly utilized in clinical settings for maintenance fluid therapy, particularly in patients with dehydration or those undergoing surgical procedures.
