Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium acetate + magnesium chloride + sodium chloride + sodium gluconate + potassium chloride is a fixed-composition balanced crystalloid electrolyte solution used for intravenous fluid and electrolyte replacement and, in specific irrigant presentations, sterile irrigation, washing, and rinsing. Products containing this exact five-electrolyte combination include **Plasma-Lyte A**, **Normosol-R**, **Plasma-Lyte 148**, **Physiolyte**, and certain **Isolyte S** presentations. The solution provides sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate at concentrations designed to approximate extracellular fluid. Acetate and gluconate are metabolizable anions that consume hydrogen ions during metabolism and act as bicarbonate precursors, providing an alkalinizing effect. It is used as a source of water and electrolytes in dehydration, extracellular-fluid loss, and electrolyte imbalance; irrigation-only presentations are not intended for intravenous administration.
