Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium acetate + magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate + potassium chloride + sodium chloride is a **sterile, isotonic, balanced multi-electrolyte intravenous crystalloid solution** used for fluid and electrolyte replacement and as an alkalinizing agent. It is marketed most prominently as **Plasma-Lyte A** and **Normosol-R**. The solution supplies sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate in proportions intended to approximate physiologic plasma electrolyte composition; acetate and gluconate function as bicarbonate precursors that help buffer metabolic acidosis, while the electrolytes restore extracellular fluid volume and electrolyte balance. It is used in adults and pediatric patients for hydration, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and alkalinization, and closely related formulations are also used for general irrigation, washing, and rinsing. This is a **small molecule electrolyte combination product**, not a biologic or targeted therapeutic, and is associated commercially with Baxter and with Pfizer through the Normosol-R/Hospira lineage.
