Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium alginate + sodium bicarbonate is a combination pharmaceutical product used for the symptomatic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, and acid regurgitation. It operates through a dual mechanism: sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a thick, viscous gel (raft) that floats on top of the stomach contents, physically preventing the reflux of acid into the esophagus. Simultaneously, sodium bicarbonate acts as an antacid by neutralizing stomach acid and releasing carbon dioxide, which becomes trapped in the alginate gel to increase its buoyancy. This combination provides rapid relief from acid-related discomfort and a prolonged physical barrier against reflux.
