Reflustat is an oral anti-reflux medication developed and marketed by Jadran - galenski laboratorij (JGL). It is a combination product containing sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate. The drug's primary mechanism of action is the formation of a physical barrier, often referred to as an 'alginate raft,' which floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft is created when the alginate reacts with gastric acid, while the bicarbonate and carbonate components react to release carbon dioxide, which provides buoyancy to the raft. This physical barrier prevents the reflux of gastric acid and pepsin into the esophagus, providing relief from symptoms of heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Additionally, the carbonate and bicarbonate salts provide a buffering effect to neutralize excess stomach acid.
