Overview
Algicid is an oral antacid and raft-forming suspension developed by Philadelphia Laboratories. It is a fixed-dose combination containing sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate. Upon contact with gastric acid, the sodium alginate component reacts to form a viscous gel, while the sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate components react with acid to release carbon dioxide gas. This gas becomes entrapped within the alginate gel, causing it to float on top of the stomach contents as a protective 'raft' or physical barrier. This barrier physically prevents the reflux of gastric acid, pepsin, and bile into the esophagus, thereby relieving symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) such as heartburn, acid regurgitation, and indigestion. Additionally, the carbonate components act as conventional antacids to neutralize excess stomach acid.
