Compound sodium alginate suspension is an oral reflux suppressant combination therapy used for the symptomatic relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including heartburn and acid regurgitation. Developed by Reckitt Benckiser, the formulation typically consists of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate. Upon ingestion, the suspension reacts with gastric acid to form a resilient, pH-neutral physical barrier known as a "raft" that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft effectively blocks the reflux of acid, pepsin, and bile into the esophagus. The bicarbonate component reacts with acid to release carbon dioxide, providing buoyancy to the raft, while calcium ions cross-link the alginate polymer to increase its structural integrity. It is primarily used for short-term symptom relief in patients with non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and erosive esophagitis.
