This investigational oxygen-producing gel is a topical formulation developed by Wake Forest University for wound healing applications. The product consists of sodium bicarbonate and hydrogen peroxide suspended in an emollient base. Upon application, the sodium bicarbonate creates an alkaline environment (pH 7.0 to 8.5) that facilitates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, resulting in the localized release of molecular oxygen at the wound site. This mechanism is intended to reverse wound hypoxia, modulate the wound microenvironment, and accelerate the healing of incisional or chronic wounds. The formulation was evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial for pediatric patients undergoing bilateral hernia repair to assess its safety and efficacy on incisional wound healing.
