Sodium bicarbonate ringer's solution is a sterile, clear intravenous fluid composed of multiple electrolytes including sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate, and citric acid. It is designed as an extracellular fluid replacement for use in situations where circulating blood volume and interstitial fluid are reduced (such as trauma or surgery), and for the correction of metabolic acidosis. The inclusion of sodium bicarbonate allows it to directly correct acid-base imbalances by providing a source of base to neutralize excess hydrogen ions. This formulation is considered a fifth-generation perioperative infusion solution with advantages over traditional lactated Ringer’s solutions in certain clinical scenarios[1][2][5]. It was originally developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical in Japan and has since been produced by several manufacturers.
