Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This investigational toothpaste formulation, developed by the University of Catania, contains a high concentration of sodium carbonate (67% w/w) in combination with fluoride. It is designed for the treatment of gingivitis, utilizing the mechanical and chemical properties of sodium carbonate to disrupt bacterial biofilms and modulate the oral environment. Unlike more common sodium bicarbonate-based toothpastes, this product uses sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) to achieve its antimicrobial effects. The formulation is currently being evaluated in a randomized, double-blind controlled trial (NCT06224699) to determine its clinical efficacy in reducing gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation over a six-month period in patients diagnosed according to EFP/AAP 2017 criteria.
