Overview

HyperSal 6 (HyperSal6) is a sterile, preservative-free hypertonic saline solution containing sodium chloride 6% w/v (1 mmol/mL), formulated for inhalation via a nebuliser. Developed by the Pharmacy Business Unit at the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, it acts on the airway surface liquid via osmosis to mobilise and clear respiratory secretions by reducing the thickness and stickiness of mucus in the lungs. It is indicated for conditions requiring improved mucus clearance, including cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and acute lower respiratory tract infections. In clinical trials, it has been evaluated for its feasibility and short-term respiratory benefits in children with severe neurological impairment and acute lower respiratory tract infections.
