Overview

Sodium chloride + dextrose (specifically the D5-0.9%NS formulation) is an intravenous crystalloid solution being investigated by the University of Calgary as a preventive treatment for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) in children with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection. The therapeutic strategy, known as early aggressive rehydration or hyperhydration, involves administering high volumes of intravenous fluids (e.g., 200% of maintenance) to achieve significant volume expansion. This approach aims to maintain renal blood flow and glomerular filtration, thereby reducing the risk of acute kidney injury and the progression to HUS, which is a severe complication of STEC-associated gastroenteritis. The intervention is currently being evaluated in the Phase 3 HIKO-STEC trial (NCT05219110).
