The mechanism involves maintaining plasma sodium levels and osmolality, particularly in patients with elevated antidiuretic hormone (ADH) levels, where hypotonic fluids can lead to water retention and subsequent electrolyte imbalance. Isotonic solutions are hypothesized to reduce the risk of hyponatremia by providing a sodium concentration similar to that of plasma.
